Walsall canal scheduled for much needed dredging

Laurence Hogg, a member of CanalScape BCN, the Yahoo newsgroup that focuses on the Birmingham Canal Navigations, reports that BW have plans to dredge the Walsall Canal this winter.

Dredging is expected to commence during November starting with the clearance of bridge holes and weirs.

Local waterway enthusiasts are hoping that this will encourage more regular cruising of this interesting but neglected part of the BCN. The presence of more boats may help convince the local population that the canal has a more beneficial purpose than just being a convenient dumping ground.

Congratulations to BW manager Dean Davies for being able to find the money to finance this much needed operation in economically lean times! Dean was given a tour of the area by CanalScape BCN a short while ago – perhaps that helped convince him of the potential of the area.
