New conservation group created to keep canal tidy

Richard Rush of the Loughborough Echo reports:

A GROUP of volunteers tired of Loughborough Canal being a mess are vowing to tidy it up.

Four regular boaters have come together to form the Clear Cut Conservation group which will regularly patrol the local beauty spot.

And that means come May 1 and 2 when the annual Canal Festival is in full swing the area will be looking in tip top condition.

The idea came from Barrie Ball who lives on the canal and hes being helped out by fellow boater Jane Johnson and Canal Festival organiser Jo Swift alongside husband Morris.

We want to make sure the canal is tidy right through the town from Pillings Lock up to Bishop Meadow, said Mr Ball who has lived on the canal for the past 10 years. Were looking at doing cleans roughly every three weeks, so the canal can be something Loughborough is proud of.

The group are hoping to hold their first clean within the next couple of weeks.

Canal Festival organiser Jo Swift said: The canal is a vital part of Loughborough and this can only be a good thing for the town and community.

Steve Bicknell, the volunteer coordinator for British Waterways added: Were always indebted to local volunteers to help with the upkeep of the canals and we will be working alongside and supporting the group.

Its great that the local community are taking responsibility for their canal.

Around 50 per cent of the country live within five miles of a waterway and hopefully this initiative will get more people interested and using the canals.

For information on how you can join or help the group contact Jo Swift on jo_swift@mrn.co.uk or phone 01509 635827.
