Leeds Dragon Boat Race 2010

Final preparations underway

Published Date: 19 June 2010

The countdown is now under way for the Dragon Boat race in Leeds – and no team is more excited than Cardinal Youth Club.

The 13 to 16-year-olds, based in Beeston, will be the first youth team to take part in the colourful contest at Clarence Dock.

The third annual race, organised by Leeds Community Foundation and backed by the YEP, will take place next Saturday.

More than 30 of Leeds’s biggest firms will take part in the event, with each 40ft long boat powered by 16 paddlers and a drummer.

Sponsorship money raised by the teams will go towards the Leeds Community Foundation, which supports more than 3,000 community groups and charities working in some of the most disadvantaged parts of Leeds.

Yvonne Crowther, leader of Cardinal Youth Club, said: “We’ve been fortunate enough to have received funding from Leeds Community Foundation in the past and it is good that we are able to give something back.”

Carlsberg, DLA Piper, Grant Thornton, Hammonds and KPMG have already signed up for the Leeds Community Foundation Dragon Boat Race, with more than 100 races planned over the course of the day.

There are three places left in the contest, which will also feature teams from GE Money, Town Centre Securities, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Yorkshire Water.

Leeds Community Foundation is a key partner in the Yorkshire Evening Post’s annual Community Cash Giveaway.

Sponsors of this year’s event include Clarence Dock and British Waterways.
