Keen walkers urged to join Worcestershire Waterways Walk

Keen walkers are being encouraged to join the first ever 21 mile Waterways Walk in Worcestershire this summer.

The circular walk, on Sunday, August 15, is in aid of St Richard’s Hospice. Over 150 walkers have already registered.

The flat route starts at Droitwich Rugby Club and takes walkers through the beautiful scenery and open countryside of Worcestershire, passing 41 locks. The walk meanders along the recently renovated Droitwich canal to the River Severn and back along the Worcester-Birmingham Canal.

St Richard’s Hospice senior fundraiser Alison Parkes has organized the event with support from British Waterways.

She said: “I’ve walked the route and it is absolutely lovely. It’s a fantastic way to discover the wonderful river and canal landscapes on our doorsteps. It’s also flat which makes it easier for walkers to complete the 21 miles.”

She said walkers need to be relatively fit to complete the walk, which she estimates will take at least seven hours of walking, excluding lunch and rest stops.

Registration is free and walkers are encouraged to raise sponsorship. Registrations close on Friday, August 6. Dogs are welcome on this walk.

The event is supported by Droitwich Spa Marina, Worcestershire County Council, British Waterways, RBS and Worcestershire Ambassadors.
