Canal & River Trust Seeks New Members for Kennet & Avon Waterway Partnership

18 September

The Canal & River Trust – the charity that cares for 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales – is recruiting three additional members for its Kennet & Avon Waterway Partnership.

The Waterway Partnership plays a key part in shaping how the Kennet & Avon Canal and the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal are run. It is currently developing a 10-year strategy which aims to help people have a greater role in looking after the canals and getting them involved in the various boating, volunteering, education and ecology projects that are on-going.

Nine people currently sit on the Partnership, drawn from different waterways interests such as walking, boating, canoeing and angling. The three new members being sought will ideally have expertise in tourism, communications, health and working with young people.

Tamsin Phipps, chair of the Kennet & Avon Waterways Partnership, said: “The Kennet & Avon and Bridgwater & Taunton Canals are among the most beautiful in the country. They play a really important and varied role in the community, and we want to improve them even more in the future. Becoming a member of the Partnership is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to help communities take real ownership of their local stretch of canal. As a relatively new charity, Partnership members will also play an important role in influencing how the Trust develops in its early years. I’d encourage anyone with an interest in the waterways and the local community to get in touch.”

The roles are voluntary with expenses paid and will involve approximately two-four days a month. For more information please contact Mark Stephens, Waterway Manager, on 01380 737901.
