Justin Davis Smith is Volunteering England chief executive and eight committee members will advise the charity on volunteer recruitment and management

The Canal and River Trust has appointed Justin Davis Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England, to head up a new advisory committee intended to provide to help it recruit and manage volunteers.

The new charity, which until last month was the quango British Waterways, has become the 13th largest organisation in the voluntary sector with an annual turnover of more than £200m.

Among its targets is to increase the number of regular volunteers to 20,000, contributing more than 120,000 days a year, by 2022. Volunteers currently contribute about 20,000 days a year to the waterways network.

The other eight members of the volunteering advisory committee are:

Helen Timbrell, director of volunteering and community involvement, National Trust

Georgia Boon, head of volunteering, Oxfam

Chris Kay, chairman of the Boat Museum Society, National Waterways Museum

Mike Palmer, trustee of the Inland Waterway Association and chairman, the Waterway Recovery Group

John Stopp, member of Manchester & Pennine Waterways Partnership and current waterways volunteer

Gennie Franklin, director of programmes and employee volunteering, Business in the Community

Rosie Cotgreave, volunteer, v inspired

Tracey O’Brien, director of policy and programmes, Birmingham Voluntary Service Council
